How performance testing applies to security, alarm, and control systems, as well as voice and data systems

When it comes to performance testing, voice/data and security alarm or access control systems are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from each other. Data performance testers can now be used to test the data handling capabilities or cabling, no matter what the application. This is due to the current process of moving these systems over to Ethernet/IP.

While a VDV II tester can be used to test 2 or 4 conductor cables for alarm or access controls, using a transmission tester is more beneficial for checking accuracy and how the cable will perform in a real-life application. By having the documentation to prove performance after troubleshooting or installation, customers can be reassured that the system works correctly at the conclusion of the job. This makes it clear that any issues further down the line are unrelated.

Data carrying isn’t the only variable that needs to be taken into consideration when choosing a tester. It’s important to determine how PoE is being used to power CCTV cameras, sensors, access control, signage, A/V and numerous other devices. The value of a data transmission tester that can verify PoE shouldn’t be overlooked, as the PoE testing process is becoming increasingly more essential.

Before getting started with troubleshooting PoE, installers and technicians should ask: is the switch providing enough PoE power? Is the cable of sufficient quality? And is the cable at the right length to transmit the power? All of these elements can impact the ability of PoE devices to operate correctly.
